WORKSHOPS AT THE BRAND LIBRARY AND ART GALLERY

Come join the Association of Hysteric Curators at the Brand Library this Sunday March 12, from 10:30-2:00 p.m. for 3 exciting workshops, make clothes out of organic material, dress up as a heroine and make a collage this Sunday with the AHC artists Rachel Finkelstein, Mary Anna Pomonis and Allison Stewart!

Rachel Finkelstein Accessorize As You See It

This workshop uses tree bark, and plants gathered from artist Rachel Finkelstein’s walks in the “urban forest” of Los Angeles. This is an exercise in creating alternative fashion objects by using recycled and found objects. We will use our time together to get to know each other, relax, and be creative. We will have a fashion show in the end to share our new accessories with each other.

Uncommon Curriculum Collage and Resurrecting Matilda Photo Booth

Inspired by the stories left out of state adopted textbook curriculum. The Uncommon Curriculum workshop will utilize old out of date textbooks as source materials for participants to examine the historical erasure of women from curriculum in textbooks. The phenomenon was named for the women’s-rights activist Matilda Joslyn Gage, “The Matilda Effect” and refers to the erasure of female scientists who have been left out of textbooks and their accomplishments credited to their male peers. The workshop will explore the timeline of female historical erasures from the women who made the first cave paintings at Lascaux France, to Sumerian poet Enheduanna the world’s first recorded author, to Cleopatra who invented the first modern system of organized coinage to Lady Mary Wortley Montague, who brought the process of variolation and inoculation to Europe.

Workshop #1 Uncommon Curriculum Collage

Participants in the workshop will be given an out of date textbook to cut up and repair with proper spot illustrations and text to literally insert the missing women from the curriculum. The finished books with their collaged and embellished parts will be placed on display in the gallery and photographed for posterity.

Workshop #2 Resurrecting Matilda Photo Booth

Allison Stewart and Mary Anna Pomonis will be setting up a photo studio in the Brand Library and photographing self-identifying women as their heroines. Come dressed as the heroine of your choice or create a costume from our wardrobe. We will be exploring set and lighting as well as the different ways heroines are depicted in the history of painting and photography. You will receive a free digital photo of your portrait to use as you wish.
